New User Account Creation in a Hybrid Environment

Modified on Fri, 1 Mar, 2024 at 10:41 AM

This process is for setting up a new user's AD and mailbox accounts in an hybrid environment. By not using this order for setting up an account, issues such as scan to email (from printers) and calendar issues through Microsoft teams may be experienced by the user.

New User Account Creation

The Process:

  • Step 1: Create AD Account
  • Step 2: Assign Microsoft License
  • Step 3: Exchange Server
  • Step 4: Exchange Management Shell

Step 1: AD Account

  • Create the new user’s AD account in Active Directory (Domain Controller: stldc08.hagerco.com). You can create the account on any domain controller, however, accounts created on DC 08 will be instant whereas accounts created on other DCs will need time to replicate the new account to the other DCs in the environment. Account can be created as new or from copying a user with similar job role.

Step 2: Assign Microsoft License

  • After account has been created (on-prem), locate the account in Active Directory.
  • Assign the user to the group "O365-E5"
  • Click "Apply" then "OK"

Step 3: Exchange Server (On-Prem)

  • Connect to the On-Prem Exchange server. To do this, I RDP to STL-EXCH-01. Run (as Admin) the Exchange Server Management Shell (Powershell).

4: Exchange Server Mangement Shell (Powershell)

  • Using the Exchange Powershell prompt, enter the command:

Enable-RemoteMailbox "user alias" -RemoteRoutingAddress "username@hagercompanies.mail.onmicrosoft.com"
  • Note: keep the parentheses around the email address. Fill in the correct information for the “user alias” and "username@hagercompanies.mail.onmicrosoft.com". The user alias can first initial last name as one word. E.g. kblank.

Finished! User account and mailbox should be ready to use.
